It's About Time!

Holy Kanoli- it has been ages since I have blogged.
My life schedule is as follows...school, homework, school, homework, work, nap, eat, homework...etc. This past week I have preparing for Finals, I've worked on SIX different papers and I am ready to throw in the towel for writing! I long for the time when papers used to be two to three pages in length and you could crank them out the night before. Unfortunately for me, due to a disorder I have, I can not function without knowing that I will receive a perfect A on each and every one....that means working extra hard to revise and polish each one! Urgh! NOT FUN! So other than preparing for Finals my life has been pretty dull. My life revolves around school. Only 8 more day's left and then I am home free! :)

So the bottom two are of me obviously running....the bottom one is of with me running my first half marathon ( and yes I was sweating like a "B"...I was soaked...but I blame it on the humidity :D ) The second was RIGHT after I crossed the finish line. That moment in time is a blur but as you can tell I am so STOKED that I FINISHED IT- and without walking, I might add! :) I was so excited to be done, if you can't tell!
This picture right below (the first one) is of me at a Senate meeting. This picture was taken just last week when were were up in Idaho Falls at the University Place. So I guess this picture is proof that I actually do stuff...even though I am a little embarrassed to say that I am laughing in this picture and I probably should take Senate a little more seriously.

Update!

Okay so I realize that it has been an extremely LONG time (4 months!) since I have updated my blog...wow!?! All I can say is that time and my life has gotten away from me. So I decided that I would give a brief synopsis of what I have been up too since my last post. :)

Summer 2009

From earlier posts you are aware that I spent the summer in Milwaukee Wisconsin with my brother Stephen and his family. I took care (nanny) of my niece Jocelyn (5) and Carter (3). I loved ALMOST every minute I was there- haha! During the summer my friend Wade came out to visit and I showed him around Milwaukee and Chicago. We went to a Brewers game and a Cubs game. It was so much fun to be able to look at the sites and go to TWO professional baseball games! The rest of the summer was me still taking care of the kids, packing up the house to move, and training for my half marathon. All were accomplished, all were TOUGH, and valuable lessons were learned! I now know that I am NOT ready to have kids of my own...I can only handle them in short periods of time- but I also learned how much I LOVE my niece and nephews. I learned that moving sucks- if I can help I will try to not do it often. Lastly, I learned that training and running the actually half marathon was extremely difficult...but so worth it! I have now set the goal to start training for a Triathalon...so wish me luck! My half marathon was the mark of the end of the summer.

Fall 2009

School started...ewww...yuck! Actually, at the end of summer I couldn't wait till school started, now that I am in the middle of the semester I can't wait till it is over! I am a Secondary Education/ History major with a minor in Political Science for those of you who forgot or didn't know. This semesters school credit load isn't that bad but alot of work is involved. I have never read so much in my life! In ALL (two) of my education classes I read every night and in every history class I read some more. My favorite is that each teacher thinks they somehow are my only class and so why not load up the pages and chapters each night? Urgh! Anyhoo...I am scraping by this semester in my classes, even though I feel like I am learning tons- I somehow feel like I am getting dumber and dumber? So I don't know how that works out- hmm?
This Fall marks my 2nd year with Ambassadors! Ambassadors is one of my greatest joys and blessings in life....it is also one that continually expects alot from me...even though I love every minute! Every Friday starting at 10am I go up to the Administration Building and work for 6 hours straight. These past couple weeks I have been extremely busy running up and down campus giving tours to prospective students. Last Saturday was Homecoming and I was able to volunteer with a couple other ambassadors to help out at the Presidents Tailgate. It was so much fun greeting and talking with all the old people who were alumni from ISU. There were a couple of old ladies who dressed up in a full black leotard with an orange and black boa, and orange high heels and cat ears! I truly love every moment of Ambassadors and I can't wait till I can start going out with the recruiters to visit and talk to the high school students!
Also this Fall I officially started my term as ASISU College of Education Senator. Every Monday I dedicate HOURS of meetings to senate. It has been an interesting experience for me to learn how to participate in Student Government at a college level...it definetly is NOT like high school. I have enjoyed making new friends and meeting people every day as I try to represent my constituents well. I am really grateful to be given this opportunity and am working really hard to do better than my best!

In conclusion, my life is CRAZILY busy...but I LOVE every second of it! I can honestly say that without this schedule I wouldn't know what to do with myself. This past summer and fall has brought numerous life lessons along with responsibilities and of course blessings along with it! I truly LOVE my life...who knows- maybe next time I update my blog I will have some crazy exciting news to post!?!

A "Tantalizing" Thursday

We've all had a crazy day that comes along every once in a great moon that makes life a bit more interesting...I'm talking about when everything and anything goes wrong and/or makes a great story to tell? Well today was a day full of stories!

Appox. 2:50pm Thursday 18th
Early this morning I had been debating over the idea of taking the kids (Jocelyn 6 and Carter 3) on a bike ride and then to the park or doing a craft? Well after a few hours of hitting, arguing, the shedding of tears, and the never ending torture of hearing tattle tales, I decided we HAVE to go outside! After loading the kids in the cart hooked to the back of my brother's bike, we were off! Near the house and the park is a trail that goes for miles and miles and I had planned on putting a few miles in...well on my way back towards the park on the trail, I saw something strange that startled me and made my brain and body a little fearful. Up ahead of me I saw I bike off the side of the trail in some long grass. It was a ways up and my mind began to wonder what a bike, that was NOT there earlier when I rode past, was doing there. I began to think the worst. As I approached closer (like 50ft away) I saw a man's head pop up out of the grass! "What the crap!" I thought to myself..."Am I going to be attacked?" The realization of the fact that I could not out run(I mean ride) this guy came upon me as I TRIED to pettle faster with the extra weight of two kids asleep in the buggy behind me. But as the distance became shorter and shorter between me and my attacker...I watched as the shirtless man awkardly stood up locking eyes with me, turning dramatically around- doing all this as he pulled up his underwear and shorts! Talk about Embarrassing for HIM...and awkard for me, he must have been a little preoccupied taking a bathroom break to notice me!

Appox. 3:15pm Thursday 18th
After the crazy situation of "riding" up on someone going the bathroom, I felt it was time to play at the park. After we had our fair share of playing, it was time to go home for OUR needed bathroom break. We were walking over to the bike and buggy when I saw it! "It" was a water snake! I had almost stepped on it and although I wanted to scream and run- someone needed to protect these kids!I mean this snake was HUGE- at least 20 inches long! My niece was pointing and obviously frightened as she jumped up and down...but my nephew on the otherhand had me chasing him as he chased the snake! After I calmed myself down- and of course the kids we headed home for the next leg of my day's adventures!

Appox. 7:03pm Thursday 18th
This last Sunday I made a new friend! Yes- an actual person who would want to hang out with me here in Milwaukee! Her name is Alicia...and let's just say we became fast friends. Tonight she picked me up to go to Institute with her for a little gospel doctrine learning, mixed with volleyball and treats. On the way there is where the story really begins... Alicia and I LOVE Lady GaGa- and ecspecially the song "Pokerface," well after we had totally rocked out to it in the car, the car decided to stop running. Luckily, Alicia and I were able to pull over in a nice neighborhood. We quickly came to the conclusion that either we were being punished for listening to that kind of music or somebody aka Satan did not want us to go to Institute. After knocking on three doors we finally found someone to help jump the car. Okay, so being girls who know absolutely nothing about cars, we thought the battery just needs jumped, right? WRONG!That idea didn't work! Well Alicia called her Dad to come to our aide in this dire situation. After assessing the situation himself and making a few phone calls; three hours later a tow truck finally came! And after a long day and night I was back home relaying the details of my day to my brother Stephen and I guess to YOU!

What a day...what a day!

Okay so as I was just proofreading this post when ANOTHER thing happened to add to the events of this day- my room began to flood with water! It just barely started raining only an hour ago and because it is a torential downpour(like it usually happens here in Milwaukee) and my room being in the basement- I guess it was meant to be! I now have towels rolled up under my bed, the sheets and blankets all up and absoluletly NOTHING on or touching the ground. De-humidifier and fans are both on and I am exhausted! Goodnight!

My First Week in Milwaukee

I have officially been in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for 9 days! May 28th at exactly 2:30am was the start of my adventure. After a very early morning and an interesting ride with Salt Lake Express I arrived at the Salt Lake Airport to Flight 428 to Chicago, Illinois. After a few roadblocks like; waiting in the wrong line for 45 mins and of course the lovely random security check of my full bag/person…and then realizing that even after all that I was still 2 hrs early to board my flight- I arrived at the O’Hare Airport!
With a one hour drive behind me I finally reached Milwaukee! My first weekend was spent celebrating my niece’s 6th Birthday, helping my sister-in-law prepare a “Sharing Time” lesson, and of course unpacking(okay not really, sadly I had limited packing due to a weight limit- ridiculous!)
My official start was Monday and boy was it a rocky ROCKY start! I woke up at 5:30am to Tara, my personal trainer aka my sister-in-law, explaining what was to be expected of my new fitness routine/half marathon training. After a very sweaty workout, I began getting Jocelyn ready for school…and that was where everything went down hill- FAST! Jocelyn does not like getting dressed, her hair fixed, or eating breakfast. Long story short, she missed the bus; yet oddly enough I was “driving the short bus” that morning! Her dad, my brother Stephen, had to drive home from medical school to take Jocelyn to school.
The next adventure of this “first week” story is that I am currently Potty-Training my nephew, Carter. I can honestly say that not only is this a learning experience for him, but a whole new eye opener filled with lessons for ME! My mom said that it wouldn’t be “too hard” and that I should have it easily done in three days- Haha, Yah Right! I am going on the sixth day and I don’t know if it is possible, but I think Carter not only has a pure disgust for the Potty but for me as well. So please remember me and Carter in your prayers…We, no I need all the help I can get!
Friday night I was invited by one of Stephen and Tara’s friends to go to Ravinia Park to a Camelot Concert. In downtown Chicago, Tara and I got all dressed up for a night full of fun, not only were we invited to the actual performance but to the after party with all the performers! Summer Smart, Tara’s friend who invited us, was one of the performers in the concert…so pretty much a STAR! Ravinia Park was absolutely beautiful! Just to enter this park it cost $25.00 and you could definitely tell it was worth ever penny! The concert was outside in what I can only describe as something like the concerts they have in Central Park in NYC. It truly was a night full of memories!
I am so grateful to have this opportunity to spend the summer with my brother and his family. I would never have imagined to have a job where I get to take care of my niece and nephew…pretty much get paid to be a stay at home mom! I will definitely have to keep you all up to date with the many experiences and stories that I have yet to come!
I love and miss you all back home…don’t forget me! 

Jocelyn's Birthday!

On May 30th Jocelyn turned 6! Saturday I decorated the house with Jocelyn, helped bake the cake with Tara...and then after opening presents and eating cake and ice cream, went to a park and rolled down a hill numerous times until I was completely nauseous and bruised- what better way to end a 6 year old birthday! Happy Birthday Jocelyn!

The Hike to Heck and Back!

Last Saturday a group of my friends from the singles branch here in Idaho Falls went on a hike. But before you start assuming that this hike was somewhere up in the beautiful hills of Idaho...guess again! Past Aberdeen, about 45 minutes driving to nowhere, you will come upon a spot that was once the natural disaster area of a volcanoe! Yes folks- we hiked purely on Lava Rocks! The goal was to hike a few miles to this cave that was once a "lava funnel?" Little did I know, the cave, was lava rocks covered in ICE! So it was quite the adventure! But oh the MEMORIES!

So I ripped my pants- big deal right? Well although I do NOT look flattering in this picture...I decided that life must go on! I walked the remainder of the hike with my pants ripped and my underwear clearly being seen.

STORY

We were all coming out of the cave (which was nothing but lava rocks and lava rocks covered with ICE- bad combo!) As I was about to step down onto this patch of ice covered rocks I destinctly remember saying to myself,"I better grab on to this ice thing...so I have a hold of something in case I fall." Before I go on, this "ice thing" that I am referring to is that of a stalagtite that is purely made from the drips of water thus creating a large (almost 3/4 of my hieght)ice stature thing. Anyways I grab onto only to discover as I am slipping aka FALLING that this ice sculpture can't hold my weight! So I fell...right on my bottom! Just out of pure spite I knocked over the ice stalagitite next to me- and with all of that commotion my friends quickly came to my aide to see what had happened. Keri Wheeler was first on the scene- and after quickly assessing the situation (my bum) declared, "Don't worry Shalene, your pants are just wet- not ripped!" A sudden relief came over me as I continued out of the cave. As I was climbing out of the mouth, Talitha Judy (another friend) noticed something and quickly stated her discovery, "Shalene! Do you know that your pants are ripped? Better yet, I can see your bright pink underwear!" "Oh my GOSH!" I thought to myself. As soon as her words had escaped her mouth...everyone heads in the group turned dramatically to check out my "situation." I quickly thought of covering up my embarrassment with a shirt tied around my waist, but upon everyone ALREADY seeing my underwear- I thought what the heck...who cares; So I put the shirt away! I walked a little taller that day- not of embarrassment as some would believe- but of Pride...I am an extreme hiker!

GaGa for Lady GaGa!

My roomie Belle and I decided one Sunday night a couple weeks ago that we absolutely loved the "Pokerface" by Lady GaGa and we wanted to make a music video. Unfortunately the music video hasn't been upload yet (that would be my fault!) but we took a few pictures. Not going to lie...I am a little embarrassed by the way I look- but I figured what the heck I will post it on my blog so that people can see what I do on my spare time...Yes- that is right...I dress skanky and listen to "Pokerface" every spare second I get! :)

"No more school, No more books, No more teacher's dirty looks!"

So I am sitting in one of ISU's computer labs in the SUB (Student Union Building)and I thought to myself, I should update my blog...since it has been ages! Today was my last day of school! "Horrah- Horray, Ooh what a grandius day!" If you haven't noticed already I have been singing ridiculous little songs all morning! Today started out for me at 5:15am! After waking from a horrible night of no sleep. (Due to the fact that I watched this scary "hauting" show on Lifetime last night- Liftime! Of all the networks to watch a scary show on...anyways I watched it by myself and I freaked myself out!) So I couldn't sleep...the whole night I kept saying to myself, "Shalene, you know very well that you can't watch scary movies...and of all the nights to watch one...the night before your huge Geology Final!" I pretty much felt stupid lying there alone, in my dark room (actually I had to turn a lamp on- don't laugh!) feeling scared and stressed! Well after that restless night I rushed to Pocatello to take my last exam this sememster- my cursed Geology Final at 7:30am! Urgh! I'm not going to lie, I hated that class and probably skipped it one too many times- Oops! Well as I sat yesterday studying for this stupid class, I looked back and regreted all the times that I had "accidentally" slept in, or "happened to forget" that I had it. Well at exactly 10:00am I finished my Final! And it was a BEAR! I think that I failed it, but I have high hopes of pulling off a strong C in the class. For all of you who know me, you may be surprised by this story of my lack of being a good student, Well-Shalene Marie Summers skipped class and probably failed her final- meaning she will get a C in the class! But on the bright side of life- I am finally done with all of my generals! Woohoo!(that is if I didn't bomb that final too bad, it would be a nightmare if I had to take this class again!)
Finals week wasn't too bad. Lucky for me most of my teachers gave them early or said, "You have all worked extremely hard this semester so I am not going to have a final!" (I had TWO classes like that :) This week all I had to worry about was that stupid Geology class final, and two essay papers for my history class. I keep praying that the essays will help decifer between the borderline A/A- that I have currantly. Anyways...to make this long story a little bit shorter...I am extrememly excited to be done with school and ready to move to Milwaukee for the summer! 21 days left to departure! :)

A RaNdOm Look Into My Life!

Okay, so some of these pictures are a little crazy, but hey that is Me! Anyways, the first one I am at one of my friends b-day party and they made smoothies...I was trying to pull off a Zoolander Model pose- I thought that the look would have helped me make it to America's Top Model...Maybe? The second, is just the roomies and I- I didn't get the memo to be gangsta, I just looked confused? Lastly, I am playing "M&M Bowling" I had to bowl between a guys legs- he was a little scared...okay really scared (you would think that he didn't trust me?) P.S. I only bowled once- I absolutely HATE bowling, if I had to choose to go bowling or scrub the toilet- I would scrub the toilet!

Campaign Poster

Senator Shalene Summers

This was the picture I used on my campaign posters...I thought that I looked "teacher-ish" and looked good!

ISU's Elections...It was the best of times- it was the worst of times!

By looking at these pictures you probably thought to yourself, "What in heaven's name is Shalene doing? Is she about to leave on a trip in which she had to pack? Is she moving?" Well the answer is NO! I may or may not have walked all around campus lugging that rolling suitcase filled with 100 water bottles! No, I am not overly concerned with people's hydration, It was Election time at ISU. About a couple months ago I decided to run for College of Education Senator, and so not only did I hang numerous campaign posters all over campus- but I handed out fruit snacks and water bottles. Don't think that my life for the past TWO weeks have been totally dedicated to meeting people and trying to convince them to vote for me. On Tuesday,I woke up stressed out wondering how in the world I was going to get through everything that I had to do that day. I had a huge history test (which I might add, I rocked!)also a study group at lunch, my BIG teaching interview (that is why I wore a dress all day) to get accepted into the Education Program, and in between all of that openly campaign- handing out water bottles. Lugging around a suitcase would have to be one of those things I probably will not do ever again- I got the craziest looks and comments. To be honest I am quite sure some people swore at me, cat called, and whispered behind my back...but as soon as I gave them a water bottle- it was all good! This experience has been a great one and I am super excited for next school year's ASISU Government...I pretty much think that I am going to rock the Senate meetings!

New Roommates!

With the start of a new year, new semester...I figured why not NEW ROOMMATES? So here we are; Me, Julie Hyatt (soon to be Julie Vasquez), Britney Dean, and Belle Cardinal. Don't we look lovely? All small eyed staring in the sun? It just so happened by chance this Sunday we all wore black, white, and/or gray to church- so we had to take the opportunity of a photo shoot. As soon as we got back to our apartment we yelled for Brad (our landlord)to come and take the multiple shots and poses to make all of us; slim, nice hair, eyes open...clothes just right...and so on...as all of us know the simple things to look for while trying to make ourselves look the best in a picture!
Anyways I am so excited for my new roommates and I can already tell that there are going to be some fun times ahead! WE already have had hot tub parties, singing/dancing club nights, and lets just say we know each others food weaknesses- fast food? All in all I will have to keep you posted on more to come!

LIfe in the Big City of Milwaukee!

About a week ago I got on the Salt Lake Express and experienced the travel experience of my life. Not only did the snow (which was a considerable amount- which hindered driving) not effect my driver whatsoever and made it so I hung out in Salt Lake City airport for 5 hours for my first flight. Then to make the memorable trip worth it I was lucky enough to have my last flight cancelled in St. Paul Minnesota!
But that truely turned out to be a blessing because I was able to spend the night with my grandparents who I rarely get to see- instead of spending a sleepless night in the airport!
All in all I finally made it to my destination (Milwaukee) on Saturday. I was greeted at the airport by my brother, Stephen and his two kids Jocelyn and Carter. It has been such a treat and experience to spend this time with them. It is crazy that now that I am here I am able to feel how much I miss them. This past week I have gotten to spend so much fun time with my brother and his family. We visited the Milwaukee Art Museum, I ate Custard for the 1st time, played Thomas the tank engine, walked around Chicago, and best of all see "Wicked!" Let me just say that I absolutely loved going to Chicago. Tara (sister-in-law) and I went and it is funny to say we were ready for any thugs or attackers! We carried no purses, split up our money between pockets, and acted like we knew exactly what we were doing! Pretty much we wanted to appear like we were "Chicago-ites!" After spending an afternoon walking the "Magnificent Mile" which is store after store. I absolutely loved the city- okay I really only saw the beautiful part of it and never stepped foot in the scary neighborhoods- but I thought it could be a place for me to live!
"Wicked" that night was AMAZING! I am speechless when it comes to talking about it! I have waited five years to see it...and I finally got to experience a memory that I will cherish forever! Afterwords I got autographs, pictures and a small crush on Boq...so overall all Chicago and "Wicked" were awesome!
I am having the most amazing time of my life- I am sorry to report this, but I don't want to return to Idaho...I LOVE it here!

Milwaukee Museum

Happy New Year!
